Local Food Producers - Friend or Faux

We’ve all been bamboozled by false claims of one kind or another. Terms like “Real”, “Natural”, “Approved” – even “Free” don’t always hold true when you take a closer look under the covers. Well, now you can add “Local” to the growing list of trendy yet questionable marketing terms.

It appears that marketers drank the Kool-Aid and are cashing in on the social trend to shop, eat, buy and support local and there’s nothing wrong with that, provided that the goods or services promoted…

Rich in Agriculture, Poor in food

This past week I attended a Kitchen Table Conversations in Clinton. My wife and I were two of only about seven people who attended. It was the last of 5 meetings held in the past two weeks across Huron County. There were two reps from the local food banks in attendance. Ontario food processors: access SODP before Dec 22, 2009

Strong Ontario food and beverage processors – particularly those located in communities that have been hardhit by the recent economic downturn – are encouraged to apply to the Southern Ontario Development Program (SODP). SODP’s food and beverage initiative includes a $20 million fund of federal interest-free loans for upgrades, expansions, or modernization of commercial food and beverage production facilities, or fund a strategy to access new markets.

Minister Goodyear announces investment to support Ontario’s food and beverage processors

I guess nightshade doesn't get frost bite

The sight of nightshade's purplish/black berries in a "food grade" soybean crop is every producer's worst nightmare. They stain the seed and dramatically reduce the value of the crop. In theory, you would kill uncontrolled nightshade prior to harvest with either a herbicide (i.e. Reglone, glyphosate) or mother nature (i.e. a frost), the berries would drop to the ground, never go through the combine and the seed would be left unstained.
