We finished wheat a couple of weeks ago.

Yields were just not there this year, likely tough winter and wet, cool spring.

Looks like we had about 60 bu/ac average and we like to get average yields of 75 or 80 bu/ac.

Quality was fine this year.

How was everyone's yields? I hear they are all over the map, terrible to very good.

It looks like we are little behind normal in the London area as planting was delayed by the wet weather.

Rain again today and with this heat, the crops will be growing rapidly the next few days.

Wheat is a major crop around the world. I believe that there is a wheat harvest happening in every month of the year somewhere in the world. One of the interesting stories about wheat is that it is grown for many different different reasons depending on where you are in the world.

For the farmers in Ontario, Canada, the reasons are somewhat different than in Western Canada or the Western United States. With the majority of Ontario wheat acres going into winter varieties, wheat in the rotation creates opportunities and flexibility in the traditional Ontario soybean – wheat rotation.

Please let us know why you grow wheat no matter where you are in the world. Is wheat a cash crop for you or do you grow it just to break up your soybean and corn rotation? Do you notice higher yields in your soybeans or corn when wheat is a part of the rotation? Why do you grow wheat?

I have been doing a informal poll with some of my friends across Ontario and very few were able to plant winter wheat this past fall. It looks like there was very little planted in the US as well. Still the price has been pulled down with corn and soys the past few days.

I was wondering how everyone did this fall in their area? Did you get any planted and how does it look?
