Advancing genetic evaluation of Canadian cattle

The Canadian cattle industry is one of the country’s largest industries and a major economic driver. Canadian cattle and dairy producers hold themselves to the highest standards for quality and sustainability, which is why their genetics continue to be sought-after around the world. Today, the Honourable Lawrence MacAulay, Minister of Agriculture and Agri-Food, announced up to $1,627,270 to the Canadian Angus Association (CAA), through the AgriScience Program – Projects Component, to help improve genetic evaluation tools for Canadian beef and dairy cattle. Genetic selection tools allow producers to increase their return on investment, while accurately predicting traits that benefit the environment and respond to consumer preferences. With the development of these tools, the challenge of collecting large volumes of data and managing the complexity of the collected data has increased. With this federal support, the CAA will leverage cutting-edge technologies such as artificial intelli

Maximizing opportunities in rural communities

Indigenous and small communities play a vital role in the province’s economic landscape. Working together with non-profits, they tap into opportunities and address unique challenges to help develop local economies and grow the economic footprint in rural Alberta. To support local projects that promote innovation and sustainable economic growth across the province, Alberta’s government established the Small Community Opportunity Program. Through Budget 2023, the program has awarded grants between $20,000 and $100,000 for 43 community-led projects that build capacity in agriculture, small business supports and local economic development. “By providing financial backing, our Small Community Opportunity Program grants are empowering Indigenous and small communities to develop their local economies by building capacity in the agriculture and small business sectors. The fact is when these communities succeed, all of Alberta is made stronger.” RJ Sigurdson, Minister of Agriculture and Irri

Light Source being used to decontaminate eggs

As we recognize World Food Safety Day, researchers are working on a project to ensure we have safe eggs. Researchers are using Canada’s only synchrotron to help improve the safety of eggs and reduce the risk of food-borne illness. Scientists with the University of Saskatchewan (USask) used the Canadian Light Source (CLS) at USask to study a promising new technique for decontaminating eggs. The problem with conventional egg decontamination processes, which use chemicals and heat, is that this process can damage the egg cuticle and shell, which are natural barriers to bacteria and help to maintain nutritional quality during storage. The new cleaning method involves treating eggs using tiny water droplets sprayed with high-voltage electricity to decontaminate the shell. The researchers then used the CLS’s ultra-bright synchrotron light to produce highly detailed 3D scans of the eggs. Mehdi Heydari, a postdoctoral fellow with USask’s College of Engineering said researchers found the n
