Rain Bogs Down Saskatchewan Harvest

Saskatchewan producers made little harvest progress this past week, as rain idled combines across the province.  Thursday’s weekly crop report showed the overall provincial harvest at 79% complete as of Monday, up just 5 points from the previous week although still ahead of the five- and 10-year averages of 75% and 69%. Last year, an estimated 91% of the Saskatchewan crop was in the bin.  “Although the moisture has helped replenish topsoil moisture conditions and green up pastures for fall grazing, it has also caused concerns for downgrading of crop quality in areas yet to be harvested,” the report said.   Rain has now limited harvest progress in the province for the past two weeks.   The highest amounts of rainfall this past week were mainly recorded in the southwest region. The Gouldtown area recorded 100 mm, followed by the Richmound and Eston areas at 82 mm and 81 mm, respectively. Additionally, the Neidpath area received 78 mm and the Admiral area received 75 mm.  Cropland to

FCC Investment Boosts Financing Available to Credit-Challenged Farmers

Canadian farmers who have difficulty securing loans through more traditional lenders may now have another option. Farm Credit Canada this week announced a $60-million investment in Glengarry Farm Finance Corp., money that will significantly increase Glengarry’s ability to provide credit-challenged farmers with a more accessible source of financing. Founded by a group of farm credit specialists, farmers and finance industry professionals, Glengarry is a wholly Canadian alternative lender in the agricultural market focused on providing flexible financing solutions for primary producers in Western Canada and Ontario. Glengarry primarily works with farmers who, due to temporary credit issues, cannot secure loans through primary institutions. The company acts as a “transitional lender,” providing farmers with the financial backing they need to eventually become bankable, said an FCC release. Darren Baccus, executive vice-president, investment, FCC Capital, said FCC is committed to s

Rain, but Still Progress for Alberta Harvest

Rain delayed the Alberta harvest this past week, although producers still made better progress than their counterparts in Manitoba and Saskatchewan.  Friday’s Alberta crop report pegged the harvest of major crops (spring wheat, oats, barley, peas, and canola) at 74% complete as of Tuesday, up 11 points on the week. The harvest of all crops in the province was estimated at 75% done, up 20 points from two weeks earlier and ahead of the five- and 10-year averages of 62% and 54%.  In comparison, the Manitoba harvest was estimated at 58% complete as of Tuesday, up only 3 points from a week earlier, while the Saskatchewan harvest advanced 5 points to 79% done as of Monday.  Producers in Alberta’s North West and Peace regions made the most harvest progress this past week, with fieldwork slower in the South, Central, and North East regions.  The South Region continues to lead in overall harvest progress at 86% complete, followed by the Central at 83%. The North West and Peace regions were
