Manitoba startup benefits from new tax credit

Canadian organizations and entrepreneurs, many of them located here in the Prairies, are recognized as world leaders in digital agriculture and are poised to play a major role in increasing the productivity and sustainability of our agricultural food systems. Supporting early stage organizations is an important way to increase the speed of innovation, accelerate technology adoption, create new jobs, and foster sustainability. This month, EMILI is featuring a Manitoban company that is giving new life to the nutrients used in agriculture along Manitoba’s waterways. Typha Co. is a social enterprise that is working to find a natural solution to conserve critical minerals and non-renewable resources, and ensure climate-resilient communities and agriculture. The company is finding growth with the help of Manitoba’s Small Business Venture Capital Tax Credit (SBVCTC). About Global Biotech Week

What is Global Biotech Week? ?? BIOTECanada, Canada’s biotechnology industry association introduced the first National Biotechnology Week in 2003, encouraging provincial industry associations to create industry and outreach events. The goal was simple: to increase awareness of biotechnology and to celebrate science. Over the years, the initiative grew into a national success story, and in 2016, Biotech Week went Global! Today whether in United States, Europe, Australia, Canada or elsewhere, biotech innovation is becoming increasingly central to the global competitiveness of the industries and sectors that form the economic foundation of economies.  The goal of Global Biotech Week is to raise awareness of the industry and its global potential among policymakers, policy influencers and the public more broadly. All countries are invited to join in on the celebration and use Global Biotech Week to showcase their country’s success and the industry’s global and economic significance. BIOT

Buyer found for North West Terminal grain business—now it’s up to shareholders on whether to accept the offer

Bunge Canada has put an offer on the table to purchase the North West Terminal (NWT) grain elevator in Unity. A news release puts the purchase price at $27-million, but a final number will be disclosed to the approximately 800 NWT shareholders by the end of this week. The NWT terminal has not been buying grain for over a year due to several years of red ink caused by narrow margins and lower grain deliveries. The proposed transaction does not include the fermentation and distillation business or NWT’s minority ownership position of the Alliance Grain Terminal at the Port of Vancouver. The North West Terminal Board of Directors states money from the sale would go to pay down the $42 million debt—adding it will give the fermentation and distillation business the greatest chance of success. The proposed transaction will be discussed at a special shareholders meeting to be held during the week of October 20th. Two-thirds of voting shares are needed for the transaction to proceed. CJWW

Manitoba Government Expands Agricultural Services With New MASC Offices In Virden And Shoal Lake

The Manitoba government is strengthening support for farmers and rural communities with two new Manitoba Agricultural Services Corporation (MASC) offices in Virden and Shoal Lake, Agriculture Minister Ron Kostyshyn announced here today. “Our government is committed to ensuring Westman farmers have the tools and support they need to succeed after the previous government closed these offices,” said Kostyshyn. “By opening new MASC offices in Virden and Shoal Lake, we are making it easier for producers to access programs and services closer to home, where they are needed most.” The new offices will improve access to MASC programs and services, providing more convenient, in-person support for crop insurance, lending and other key resources, the minister said. MASC plays a vital role in supporting the province’s agriculture sector through risk management, financing, and advisory services, noted the minister, adding that the new locations are part of the Manitoba government’s ongoing effor
