Event Description

CAFA's annual CURRENT & CONNECTED Conference in Woodstock provides professional development for farm industry professionals and in-person networking for a day that is sure to please. Featured guest speakers and topics this year include:

Brent VanParys and Hali VanVliet of BDO's SuccessCare Program explaining how to build and transition three kinds of wealth. Next we have Karl Volkmar talking about AAFC research and its importance to Ontario's farmers. John Mill will then explain the three kinds of farm business structures and how and when best to apply each. Gary van Bolderen, Chair of Canadian Farm Builders is going to share information on new rules that will impact farm building plans. We end the day with Naomi Loewith with advice on how to avoid and manage legal disputes.

USDA Announces Approval of D-SNAP for Virginia Disaster Areas

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced that people recovering from Tropical Storm Helene may be eligible for food assistance through USDA’s Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (D-SNAP). Approximately 22,858 households in nine counties are estimated to be eligible for this relief to help with grocery expenses.

Cool Bean: Consider planting earlier

Research across the Midwest has shown that early-planted soybean have greater yield potential compared to those planted later. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Risk Management Agency in 2023 worked with Science for Success Soybean Specialists across the country and shifted the earliest soybean-planting date in states where data was available.
