Warm, dry weather allowed Alberta seeding to advance to near half complete this past week, well ahead of the typical pace. Friday’s crop report showed the seeding of major crops (spring wheat, barley, oats, canola, and peas) at 47% complete as of Tuesday. That is up a major 27 points from a week earlier and easily tops the five- and 10-year averages of 26% and 29%. Significant precipitation did slow seeding in the Central, North East, and North West regions just prior to the end of the weekly reporting period, but the South and Peace regions saw just scattered and/or limited showers. The seeding of major crops is most advanced in the South Region at 76% complete, followed by the Central at 51%, the North East at 37%, the North West at 29% and the Peace at 27%. Across the province, spring wheat was 66% seeded as of Tuesday, with barley and oats at 49% and 17%, respectively. Canola was 24% seeded and dry peas 74%. Saskatchewan planting is nearing the halfway mark, with just limited rainfall the past week allowing significant progress in the fields. The weekly Saskatchewan crop report on Thursday pegged overall planting across the province at 49% complete as of Monday, up 18 points from the previous week and comfortably ahead of the five- and 10-year averages of 32% and 34%. Some producers in the southwest region have already wrapped up planting for the year, the report added. The southwest region continues to lead in planting progress at 76% complete as of Monday, followed by the northwest at 49%. The southeast, west-central, and northeast regions were all at 43% done as of Monday, with the east-central region bringing up the rear at 33% complete. But while planting is advancing well, the report said warm, dry, and windy conditions are continuing to deplete topsoil moisture across the province. The Pest Management Regulatory Agency recently announced a label expansion for Vayantis seed treatment for the control of seed rot and pre-emergence damping-off caused by Pythium spp. on a wide range of crops, including ginseng, culinary herbs listed within any crop group (Crop Group 25, CG3 (chives), and CG4 (dill, cilantro, parsley)), spices (Crop Group 26), and many specialty vegetables. Consult the label for the full list of crops covered. This registration only covers Vayantis alone (picarbutrazox) and not other formulations with a mix of active ingredients (e.g., Vayantis IV). This label expansion was secured by the registrant, Syngenta Canada Inc.
