Spring Wheat Harvest Ahead of Expectations; Winter Wheat Planting Behind

US spring wheat harvest progress this past week was ahead of trade expectations, while winter wheat planting was slightly behind. Monday’s USDA crop progress report pegged the American spring wheat harvest at 85% complete as of Sunday, up 15 points on the week. That is also 2 points ahead of the five-year average and topped the average pre-report trade guess by an identical 2 points. Meanwhile, 6% of the winter wheat crop was in the ground as of Sunday, up 4 points from a week earlier and on par with the average but still 2 points behind trade expectations. In the top spring wheat production state of North Dakota, the harvest advanced 18 points from the previous week to reach 79% complete as of Sunday, 2 points ahead of last year and 1 point ahead of average. The Minnesota and Montana harvests were 89% and 91% complete as of Sunday, versus 75% and 77% a week earlier and 86% and 85% on average. Manitoba Harvest Passes One-Third Complete

The Manitoba harvest is now more than one-third complete with mostly dry conditions helping to speed progress. Tuesday’s weekly crop report pegged the overall harvest of all crops in the province at 40% done, up from 26% a week earlier. The harvest is the most advanced in the Central Region at 51% complete, followed by the Eastern Region at 47%, the Southwest at 38%, and the Interlake at 34%. Progress is least advanced in the Northwest at 25% complete. The pea harvest is now reported at 98% done, with barley and oats at 76% and 73%, respectively. The spring wheat harvest is 68% done, and canola 30% complete. Spring wheat yield estimates range from 60 to 90 bu/acre, with an average of 70 bu/acre in the Central and Eastern regions. In the north Interlake, spring wheat yields range from 25 to 55 bu/acre, and up to 70 bu/acre in the south Interlake. Oat yield estimates range from 80-180 bu/acre, with generally good bushel weights. Barley yields range from 90 to 115 bu/acre. Canol

Results of the inaugural Canadian Cow-Calf Survey

Insight into the 2023 Canadian Calf Crop The Beef Cattle Research Council (BCRC), in collaboration with Canfax Research Services and regional representatives, recently took a snapshot of production practices that have been adopted by cow-calf producers across the country, as well as performance measures of their herds. The inaugural Canadian Cow-Calf Survey collected data from 600 producers across nine provinces on the 2022 breeding season through the 2023 weaned calf crop, as well as reasoning and rationale for some practices. Survey results will be used to help the BCRC prioritize research and extension strategies funded by the research allocation of the Canadian Beef Cattle Check-Off to support producers with different types of herds and operations in various regions.
