Planting Wheat

Finally got a chance to put some wheat seed in - and even got to hook my new toy onto the planter.

Did anyone else get wheat planted? Peter Johnson at OMAFRA says there's going to be up to 700K acres -- will we hit that?

Started today until we got rained out around 4:30pm (less than 20% complete). Working around the soys that are left in the field. Maybe move to another farm tomorrow if the rain holds off.
Lots of no-till wheat went into the ground locally this week (including today). Most neighbours should be hitting their target for acres planted.

Just watched the video - interesting set-up. Did you shove the MAP down the same tube as the seed? Could this possibly work for soys also?

Hey Wayne - I put a "y" at the top of the metal seed tube that comes out of the seed boot on the JD 750 drill. One tube drops seed from the box and the air hose blows fert down the other tube. Took me a few acres to get the air pressure right - too much air and you blow seed all over the place - not enough air and the fert hoses plug. Worked perfectly for the last 150 acres, so I'm pretty happy with it. Sure beats overpaying for liquid. I hope to use the cart to deliver starter to the corn planter and soybean seed to the planter - I only use the drill for wheat.

We got everything planted that's harvested. About 75%. The last farm of beans is going to take some time to dry out but if we can get it off we can get the wheat in easily enough.

Manitoba Crop Variety Evaluation Trial Data Winter wheat yield data from the Manitoba Crop Variety Evaluation Trials (MCVET) is in for the 2024 growing season. This data provides farmers with unbiased information regarding regional variety performance, allowing for variety comparison. Data was derived from small plot replicated trails from locations across Manitoba. Fungicides were not applied to these plots; thus, true genetic potential can be evaluated. Although considerable amounts of data are collected from MCVET, the disease ratings are from variety registration data. below summarizes the yield results from the 2024 MCVET data by trial location. The yield results represent 2024 data only, therefore long-term trends should be considered when making variety selection decisions. Montana State doctoral student uses AI to help farmers in the field

Artificial intelligence seems to be everywhere these days, from social media apps to the laboratories of Montana State University. Now, thanks in part to a doctoral student in MSU’s Gianforte School of Computing, it’s in the state’s agriculture fields helping farmers take the guesswork out of maximizing crop yields. To a layperson, one field of winter wheat might look just like the one adjacent to it. However, Giorgio Morales, an MSU Ph.D. student from Peru, has the data to show that soil conditions and other variables can change significantly not just from field to field, but also in the span of just 10 meters. Morales is leveraging artificial intelligence to crunch thousands of data points to help farmers maximize their crop yields and profits while potentially lowering the amounts of fertilizers they use. Scratching The Surface: What Is Making My Cattle Itchy?

Background: Producers and veterinarians have reported situations where cattle have lost hair and showed signs of being “itchy” even after being treated with a pour-on product (e.g., Ivomec, Dectomax, Cydectin, etc.). The assumption made is that lice are developing resistance to these products. However, some veterinarians who have investigated these cases report that they haven’t found lice in all of these cases. Besides biting and sucking lice, other potential causes of itching include other parasites (e.g., microscopic mites), environmental factors (e.g., barley hull allergy, frost bite, straw mites), nutrition (e.g., vitamin A or zinc deficiencies), and mycotoxins (e.g., ergot, citrinin, T2 toxins).
