Canadian Beekeeper in Ontario

Here's Johnny Bee Good in a beeyard near Hastings Ontario in August 2011 making ready with his hive tool to remove the queen excluder, which is a metal screen that restricts the queen to the brood chambers below. This keeps eggs out of the honey supers above - you can see the super has been removed and now sits upright beside Johnny. I wrote about the 2011 honey harvest was near crop failure, on Son of a Beekeeper , my Tumblr blog.

Ontario Beekeepers Prize Pungent Buckwheat Honey

New Holland 658, Baling Hay in Ontario Canada

Talk about 'making hay while the sun shines'. Here's a short video I shot on Saturday June 16th 2012 of my nephew Ryan baling hay with his New Holland 658 hay baler. The grass feed is a mixture of alfalfa, red clover and timothy and as such will make excellent feed for the growing numbers of cows on their feedlots.

I can remember harvesting the hay in this field in the 1970s and 80s - we used to walk behind the tractor and wagon and pitch 80 lbs bales onto the wagon…

Black Bears Strike But Are Repelled By Electric Fences In Ontario Beeyards

Some black bears did launch an attack on of our remote beeyards last week! 

This is what bear damage looks like, and it could have been a lot worse. The total loss was only four frames of brood. And that's because this beeyard, like all of our locations in southern Ontario, is protected by a heavy duty solar fencer.

A robust vaccination protocol at the sow and finisher levels greatly contributed to a low prevalence of Lawsonia intracellularis (Li), according to the results of a recent study led by Hannah Walker, a student in the Carlson College of Veterinary Medicine at Oregon State University. She participated in the Swine Veterinary Internship Program last summer and conducted a Li surveillance study with her host farm Country View Family Farms and sponsor Pharmgate Animal Health. At the most basic level, it is often said that pigs need three things to grow: good food, good water and good air. The swine industry spends a great deal of input resources and effort on producing feedstuffs, precisely formulating diets based on stage of production and available ingredients, and processing and transporting those finalized diets to the correct pigs at the correct time. In fact, research by Iowa State University shows 60% to 70% of the total cost to raise a weaned pig to market weight is attributed to feed costs, highlighting the importance of feed in the overall productivity equation. A 2015 study by National Pork Board showed an estimated 70% of the energy needed to produce a market weight pig was used for production and transportation of feed. Many efforts are focused on reducing feed costs via custom formulations, additives and optimized transportation, but management of the feed after it arrives in the finishing barn can also have an impact on feed efficiency and
