Need Help Planning Grey Bruce Farmers' Week 2015

We are currently in the process of planning #GBFW15.  This will occur Jan 7-13th 2015.  This is a 7 day Ag Conference that takes place in Elmwood, Ontario.  This will be our 49th year!  We have a Beef Day, Goat Day, Dairy Day, Sheep Day, Horse Day, Ecological Day, and Crops Day.  What topics do you think we should cover?  What dynamic speakers have you heard?  Please let us know any of your thoughts.  It really facilitates our planning.

Maybe Mark Lynas (Eco Day) or Michelle Painchaud for business planning. I had a great time there this year hopefully the Weather cooperates next year for Beef day.

Thanks Josh for the suggestions.  I will look for more info on those people and if I have any more questions, I will contact you!  I hope we have better weather next year too!  GBFW14 caused me enough grey hairs - don't need more weather issues in GBFW15!  Take care!

Beef Day- A Canadian Young Leaders delegate (young speakers bring youth to events. Would be interesting to hear an 'update' from one of the Ontario delegates)

Dairy Day- Hoof health topics

Horse Day- Hoof health topics

Ecological Day- possibly cover something about endangered species or conserving watersheds around farm land

Crops Days- Philip Shaw (market outlook)

Hi Lorie, I would love to be a speaker at GBFW15! I would be interested in speaking about topics such as:

- speaking to the public about agriculture

- marketing strategies for fruit and vegetable farmers

- how to effectively promote agriculture

Hi Lorie, we have participated as an exhibitor in previous GBFW.

We would like to participate as a speaker at GBFW15.  We would be interested in speaking about various Risk Management Strategies for farms and agribusiness.  We can build it around topics like business stability with complex insurance coverage like equipment breakdown, business interruption, actual loss sustained, heat prostration and loss prevention.  There is more to insurance than just rebuilding a building in the event of a fire.  Each type of farming is very unique and we can built the presentation towards a specific type of farming.

Eric Lund, soil sensing and mapping equipment designer, very knowledgable when it comes to gaining advantages in seed rates, fertilizer rates etc. based on soil results

The governments of Canada and Ontario announced they are investing up to $20 million through the new Market Diversification and Trade Resiliency Initiative to help farmers, food processors and agribusinesses sell more Ontario grown products around the world. Officials say the Initiative will fund a variety of projects to increase competitiveness for farmers and agribusinesses and support their expansion into new and international markets as part of the provincial government’s plan to protect Ontario’s agribusiness sector. Northern BC canola farmers remain cautious as Chinese tariffs set to ease

Canola farmers and business leaders in northeast B.C. are welcoming the expected relief from easing Chinese tariffs, but say the industry still faces uncertainty going into this year’s growing season. “A deal doesn’t mean a sale,” said Les Willms, who grows between 1,300 and 1,500 acres of canola each year at his family farm in Rose Prairie, north of Fort St. John, B.C. Like many farmers in the Peace region, Willms is watching closely to see whether a new deal announced last week between Canada and China leads to renewed demand and a rally in prices in the coming weeks. Under the deal, China is expected to lower tariffs on some Canadian canola products by March 1. Carney's Canada-China deals are the product of months of diplomatic hustle

The agreements Prime Minister Mark Carney brokered over the two days of his Beijing visit are the result of months of diplomatic work and cultural knowledge, international relations experts say. Carleton University international affairs professor Fen Osler Hampson said Carney "would have not gotten on the plane" without knowing first he had "something big, some big bacon to bring back home." "The team supporting the ambassador would have definitely been working overtime on this one." On Friday, Carney announced China had agreed to lower agricultural tariffs in exchange for some access for Chinese electric vehicles to the Canadian market, and that Beijing had agreed to eventually loosen its visa requirements for Canadian visitors.
