Event Description

Starting a farm can be an exciting step on the way to realizing your entrepreneurial business. Whether you currently own farm land or are looking to purchase, rent or lease acreage, starting a new farm business requires planning. OMAFRA has numerous resources to help you with this process, including steps to plan strategically, understanding markets and diversification, where to find resources and get questions answered, as well as understanding regulations. This workshop is an interactive session designed to coach you as you continue your journey. Facilitated by OMAFRA Business Management Unit staff.

USDA Announces Approval of D-SNAP for Virginia Disaster Areas

The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) announced that people recovering from Tropical Storm Helene may be eligible for food assistance through USDA’s Disaster Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (D-SNAP). Approximately 22,858 households in nine counties are estimated to be eligible for this relief to help with grocery expenses.

Cool Bean: Consider planting earlier

Research across the Midwest has shown that early-planted soybean have greater yield potential compared to those planted later. The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Risk Management Agency in 2023 worked with Science for Success Soybean Specialists across the country and shifted the earliest soybean-planting date in states where data was available.
