Visiting a citrus cooperative

AALP class 17 left Seville the morning of January 15 heading to Sunaran Citrus Coop near the town of Palma De Rio. We were greeted by our tour guide Rosa for an informative tour of one of the biggest citrus coops in Spain. The coop consists of 98-100 members, all of which are farmer members.

Picking strawberries in January

Day 7 of AALP Class 17 IST contintued with one of the highlights so far on the trip, a fruit cooperative named Cuna De Platero. We were lucky enough to be taken on a tour of their greenhouses where they allowed to try some of the different varieties of strawberries that they grow.  The greenhouses are once again made with plastic and are of similar style to our previous visits this trip. They have a cooperative structure, which is something we have come to find is very common here in Spain.…

Our day began leaving the sunny Mediterranean coast and travelling to the small rural village of Alameda. We visited the Centre Tematico del campo Andaluz. This was a museum dedicated to teaching people about the past farming practices and traditions. We were met by a museum guide, and two local farmers, a father and son – Antonio Sr. and Antonio Jr. Antonio Sr. was 90 years old and had, in his lifetime, farmed in the traditional way which, for olive oil production,…

Ag and city tours make up our first few days in Spain

The AALP Class left the beautiful Toledo to head to a feedlot outside the city. We were toured around a feedlot that is part of a cooperative that consists of 9,500 head of cattle. Our host, who is the president of the cooperative, has two feedlots and 600 hectares of crop land. It was interesting to learn that the cooperative’s major export market outside of Spain are Lebanon, Turkey and Israel. These destinations have particularly stringent standards for how the beef must be treated and…

Early Manitoba Planting Held Back by Rain

Wet conditions are holding back planting in Manitoba relative to normal.  The weekly crop report on Tuesday pegged seeding across the province at 4% complete, up just 2 points from a week earlier and 5 points behind the five-year average. However, planting is still ahead of last year, when 0% of the crop was in the ground.  Spring wheat and barley are sitting at 9% complete across the province with the Central region being the most advanced at 12% complete. Earliest planted fields have started to emerge. Field pea planting is at 11% complete across the province. The Northwest region is the most advanced at 25% complete and the Southwest region is at 7% complete.  There have been a few reports of soybeans being planted where soil conditions have been suitable, the report added.  Winter wheat and fall rye survival is decent, with most producers observing winter cereal survival to be 80 - 90%. Most producers have completed fertilizer applications in their winter cereals.  Recent rain

Early Saskatchewan Planting Lagging

The first weekly crop report of the 2024 season on Thursday pegged provincewide seeding at 12% complete as of Monday, well behind the five- and 10-year averages of 23% and 20%, respectively Delays were due to much-needed rainfall, which has dented multi-year drought conditions in the province and offered hope of a better growing season. Most of the province received rain in varying amounts, with the heaviest amounts recorded in the Moose Jaw area at over 100 mm, the report said. Topsoil moisture for cropland was rated 8% surplus, 79% adequate, 12% short and 1% very short as of Monday. That is a major improvement from the final crop report for the 2023 season, released in mid-October, which put cropland soil moisture at 31% adequate, 44% short and 25% very short. Seeding in the province’s Southwest Region is the furthest advanced at 23% complete as of Monday, followed by the Southeast at 16%. The Northwest and West-Central regions were at 8% and 5% done, respectively, while the E
